The 2025 SIEAF Butoh Workshop, “Expressing Space Through the Body”, invites participants to reconnect with nature through their own bodies.
Set in Gokseong’s natural surroundings, participants experience themselves as part of the space, exploring how the body can think, feel, remember, and inhabit its environment.
Movements emerge organically, reflecting Butoh’s principles of chance and site-specificity, allowing participants to express inner memories and emotions through presence rather than dance alone.
This workshop creates a restorative communal space, where individual bodies become part of the landscape, and the “dancing body” expands into the thinking body and body as space.
-Key Point

Temmetsu Toshi Matsumoto
A Japanese Butoh artist, model, and ceramicist, he began training at the Hijikata Tatsumi Memorial Asbestokan in 1993. His work transforms the body’s inner images and nature’s energy into movement and space. Beyond teaching Butoh techniques, he explores transformation through improvisation in nature. His workshops offer “living consciousness” experiences, blending art, spirituality, and the natural world.
Butoh (舞踏) is an experimental dance form born in 1959 in postwar Japan, created by Hijikata Tatsumi and Kazuo Ohno amid social and spiritual upheaval. Initially a rebellion against traditional dance, Western ballet, and modern dance, it follows the body’s internal memories, unconscious impulses, and flowing images. Hijikata viewed the body as a “resisting apparatus” and developed Butoh-fu, a movement language centered on imagery, while Ohno expressed a more spiritual, intuitive “dance of the soul.”
Although Butoh is often associated with white makeup, slow movements, nudity, or contorted postures, these are merely appearances. Its essence lies in confronting social taboos and human nature, exploring darkness, desire, and the boundaries of life and death. Performed in ruins, forests, or streets rather than fixed stages, it emphasizes site-specificity, chance, and ephemerality. More than a performance, Butoh is a philosophical practice that translates life itself into movement, intersecting body, mind, memory, and nature.

“Sometimes blocked, sometimes reaching, your life becomes a stone within you for a moment, then turns into a star again.”
Inspired by this moving line from Rainer Maria Rilke’s Twilight, the meditation dance workshop Dance of Stones and Stars – Discovering the Stones and Stars Within was born.
How can we harmoniously balance inner work for mental health and personal growth with the practices of eating well and living well, finding equilibrium amid the routines of daily life, so that our lives become richer and more meaningful? How can we carry the weight of unresolved emotional “stones” within us and the burdens of life pressing on our shoulders, without being crushed, while wisely embracing the weight of our own existence and continuing forward on a path of growth and healing with light steps?
These questions have guided artist Gyuja Bae for the past six years through her artistic project How to Carry Stones, evolving into the meditation dance workshop Dance of Stones and Stars – Discovering the Stones and Stars Within. In this workshop, the artist invites participants to hold these questions in their hearts, to dance and meditate together, and to experience a precious time of self-healing and personal growth.
