곡성 섬진강 일대에서 구전되는 도깨비와 두꺼비의 설화를 상징적으로 해석한 공연행사로

제의적 퍼포먼스와 관객 참여형 난장 도깨비 잔치가 흥겹게 축제를 연다.

Part I – Toad Rhapsody / Part II – Dokkaebi Feast

The Dokkaebi (goblins) and toads that inspire this year’s festival theme, Seomjin River Rhapsody, are more than just figures from folktales. They are symbols of life, reflecting the generosity of nature toward humans. With gratitude for this benevolence, the festival opens with a ritualistic performance that honors these stories.

Following this, the celebration transforms into a lively party, where artists and audiences come together—dancing, rejoicing, and sharing in the spirited revelry of the Dokkaebi Feast. It is a moment where myth, art, and community unite, allowing everyone to experience the playful and generous spirit of the Seomjin River.

1부 <두꺼비 랩소디>는 관객과 예술가가 함께 참여하는 집단 의례 퍼포먼스로 설계되었다.

두꺼비 설화를 바탕으로 희생과 구원의 상징을 무대 위에 소환하고, 그 위에 인간의 소망과 지역 공동체의 기원을 봉헌한다.

퍼포먼스는 음악, 무용, 낭독, 가면, 북소리 등 다양한 매체가 혼합된 구성으로, 관람이 아닌 체험, 기록이 아닌 실천의 무대로 펼쳐진다.

관객들은 두꺼비에게 위로의 몸짓을 전하고, 자신의 염원을 접목시킨 행위로 축제에 참여한다.

두꺼비 제의는 죽은 존재를 기억하는 것이 아닌, 현재의 생을 반추하고 미래를 열기 위한 예술적 굿이다.

강, 흙, 바람, 불, 인간이 함께 어우러지는 이 퍼포먼스는 자연을 해치지 않으며, 자연의 마음을 담아낸다.

현대 예술이 할 수 있는 제의의 복원이며, 신화가 지금도 살아있음을 선언하는 선언문이다.

두꺼비는 더 이상 전설이 아닌, 예술 속에서 깨어나는 현재다.

Part I – Toad Rhapsody

Toad Rhapsody is designed as a collective ritual performance in which artists and audiences participate together.

Drawing on the folktales of the toad, the performance summons symbols of sacrifice and salvation on stage, offering human wishes and the aspirations of local communities. It combines music, dance, recitation, masks, and drum rhythms, functioning not as mere observation but as an immersive, participatory act.

Audiences convey gestures of comfort to the toads and engage in the festival through actions imbued with their own hopes. The toad ritual is not about remembering the dead, but about reflecting on the present and opening paths to the future.

Rivers, earth, wind, fire, and humans come together in harmony—respecting nature and embodying its spirit. This performance restores the ritual in contemporary art and declares that mythology is alive today. In Toad Rhapsody, the toad is no longer a legend, but a presence awakened in art.

2부 <도깨비 잔치>에서는 모든 장르의 예술가들이 도깨비로 분해 관객과 어우러지며 집단적 카니발을 펼친다.
2부의 첫 시작은 5년 동안 SIEAF 자문위원으로 활동하신 개그계의 대부 전유성 선생님(9월 25일 타계)을 추모하는 퍼포먼스로 막을 올린다.

도깨비는 우리 내면의 해방을 상징하며, 이 잔치는 억눌렸던 감정과 창의성을 예술로 분출시키는 마당이 된다.

공연은 정형화된 무대가 아닌, 움직이는 예술 굿판이다. 퍼포먼스 아트, 음악, 춤, 불쇼, 마임, 창극, 드론 퍼포먼스, 미디어아트 등 다양한 장르가 하나로 어우러지며, 관객은 경계를 넘어 예술을 통한 치유와 인간 본성으로의 자유를 경험한다. 도깨비 가면은 새로운 자아로의 변신이며, 예술은 그 가면을 통해 자유를 부여한다.

예측할 수 없는 순간들이 마법처럼 펼쳐지고, 그 안에서 우리는 서로를, 예술을, 자기 자신을 다시 만나게 된다.

이 잔치는 곡성 섬진강의 생명들의 이야기로 부터 시작하지만, 결국 지금 여기, 오늘을 살고 있는 현대인들에게 축제로서 삶의 자유와 경계를 넘나들게 하는 것으로 완성된다.

이 밤, 이야기 속 도깨비는 현대적 예술인의 모습으로 또, 예술인들과 함께 신명의 판을 펼치며 관객들에게 웃음과 감동의 복을 나눈다.

Part II – Dokkaebi Feast

At Dokkaebi Feast, artists from every genre transform into “dokkaebi” – Korea’s playful goblins – mingling with the audience and unfolding a collective carnival. The dokkaebi symbolize the liberation hidden within us. This feast becomes a vibrant arena where suppressed emotions and creativity burst forth through art. Rather than a fixed stage, the performance takes the form of a moving ritual ground of art. Performance art, music, dance, fire shows, mime, traditional Korean opera, drone performances and media art merge into one, inviting the audience to cross boundaries and experience healing and freedom of the human spirit through art.

The dokkaebi mask represents a metamorphosis into a new self, and through that mask art grants freedom.

Unpredictable moments unfold like magic. Within them we encounter one another, the arts, and our own selves anew.

Rooted in the life stories of the Seomjin River in Gokseong, this feast ultimately becomes a contemporary festival that lets today’s people cross the borders of life and freedom.

On this night the dokkaebi step out of legend as contemporary artists, creating a whirlwind of excitement and sharing laughter, emotion, and blessings with the audience.
