2026 섬진강국제실험예술제
SEOMJINGANG INTERNATIONAL EXPERIMENTAL ARTS FESTIVAL

 

 

한국의 5대 강 가운데 하나인 섬진강은 도시 문명에 크게 훼손되지 않은, 원형의 생태적 풍경을 간직하고 있는 강이다.

곡성을 흐르는 섬진강에는 두꺼비와 도깨비에 얽힌 전승이 전해 내려오는데, 이는 단순한 민속적 설화를 넘어 공동체의 지혜와 삶의 은유가 응축된 소중한 문화적 자산이라 할 수 있다.

강의 물줄기와 숲, 마을이 품은 삶의 이야기와 생명력은 오늘날 예술이 새롭게 해석하고 확장할 수 있는 풍부한 상상력의 원천이 된다.

2026 섬진강국제실험예술제(SIEAF)는 이러한 생태적·문화적 자산을 상상과 모험의 예술로 번역하며, 강과 농촌이 지닌 가치를 지역과 더불어 세계와 공유하고자 한다.

 

올해의 주제 「섬진강별곡(Seomjingang Rhapsody) 시즌2 – 자연에 스미다」는 2025년 ‘섬진강별곡’의 연장선에서 강과 설화 속에 깃든 인간의 염원을 예술적 서사로 펼쳐낸다.

특히 물·불·흙·공기로 상징되는 자연의 4원소와 인간의 삶이 유기적으로 만나는 여섯 개의 예술마당을 통해 미래 문명의 씨앗이라 할 수 있는 근원적이고 창조적인 모태로서의 농촌, 그 삶과 예술을 관통한다.

 

섬진강과 대황강의 합류가 지닌 화합과 상생의 가치는 도깨비와 두꺼비의 생명굿과 제의적 행위를 통해 안녕과 번영을 기원하며, 대자연과 인간의 깊은 연결성은 춤과 노래, 음악, 그리고 꽃이 된 인간의 행렬로 공존과 조화로운 삶의 메시지를 전한다.

2026 섬진강국제실험예술제(SIEAF)는 농촌의 삶과 시공간을 세계 예술가들과 함께 재해석하며, 지역문화예술의 새로운 패러다임을 열어가는 실험적 무대로서 농촌 유토피아를 꿈꾼다. 



The Seomjin River, one of Korea’s five major rivers, has preserved much of its original ecological landscape, remaining relatively untouched by urban civilization.

Along the Seomjin River in Gokseong, stories of toads and dokkaebi have been passed down through generations. These stories go beyond simple folklore; they are valuable cultural assets in which the wisdom of the community and metaphors of life are deeply embedded.

The river’s currents, forests, villages, and the stories and vitality they hold offer a rich source of imagination for contemporary art to reinterpret and expand.

The 2026 Seomjingang International Experimental Arts Festival (SIEAF) seeks to translate these ecological and cultural assets into art shaped by imagination and adventure, while sharing the values of the river and rural life with both local communities and the wider world.

This year’s theme, “Seomjingang Rhapsody Season 2 – Immersed in Nature,” continues the journey of Seomjingang Rhapsody from 2025, unfolding the human hopes and aspirations embedded in the river and its legends through artistic narratives.

In particular, through six artistic programs in which human life organically encounters the four elements of nature—water, fire, earth, and air—the festival explores rural life and art, viewing the countryside as a fundamental and creative ground in which the seeds of future civilization can take root.

At the confluence of the Seomjin and Daehwang Rivers, the values of harmony and coexistence are expressed through a life ritual inspired by the dokkaebi and the toad, together with ritualistic acts that wish for well-being and prosperity. The profound connection between nature and humanity is expressed through dance, song, music, and a procession of people becoming flowers, conveying a message of coexistence and harmonious living.

The 2026 Seomjingang International Experimental Arts Festival (SIEAF) reinterprets rural life, space, and time together with artists from around the world. As an experimental platform opening a new paradigm for regional arts and culture, the festival envisions a rural utopia.

섬진강별곡 — 자연에 스미다

 

2026년 가을, 곡성의 섬진강은 다시 예술의 강으로 흐릅니다.
강과 숲, 논과 밭, 마을과 사람의 삶이 서로 스며드는 풍경 속에서 우리는 자연을 바라보는 새로운 태도와 예술의 가능성을 다시 묻고자 합니다. 곡성은 도심의 정형화된 공연장을 벗어나 강과 숲, 논과 밭, 마을과 농촌의 일상이 예술의 무대가 되는 자연극장입니다.

「섬진강별곡(Seomjingang Rhapsody)」은 섬진강을 따라 살아온 사람들의 이야기를 오늘의 예술로 다시 부르는 작업입니다. 농부의 노동과 마을의 기억, 세대를 이어온 설화와 일상의 풍경, 강을 따라 생성되고 사라져온 수많은 삶의 이야기가 동시대 예술가들의 몸짓과 소리, 이미지와 퍼포먼스를 만나 2026년의 별곡이 됩니다.

‘별곡(別曲)’은 본래 사람들의 삶과 시대의 정서를 노래하던 서사였습니다. 우리는 그 의미를 오늘의 섬진강으로 가져오고, 아직 오지 않은 미래의 이야기를 더해 새로운 곡조를 만들어가고자 합니다.

 

스민다는 것은 경계를 허무는 일입니다.
물이 흙에 스미듯, 빛이 숲에 스미듯, 사람의 삶 속으로 예술이 들어가고 예술가의 감각 속으로 자연과 주민의 삶이 들어옵니다. 그 과정에서 누가 예술가이고 누가 관객인지, 어디까지가 작품이고 어디부터가 일상인지 그 경계는 조금씩 흐려집니다.

 

섬진강은 오래도록 서로 다른 삶을 이어주는 강이었습니다. 수많은 지류와 마을을 품고 흐르며, 사람과 사람, 인간과 자연 사이에 보이지 않는 길을 만들어왔습니다. 우리는 이 강의 방식에서 오늘 우리가 다시 배워야 할 공존의 태도를 발견합니다.

 

2026 섬진강국제실험예술제는 예술을 통해 자연과 인간의 관계를 다시 묻습니다.
기후위기와 지역소멸이라는 현실 앞에서 농촌을 사라져가는 공간으로 바라보는 대신, 생태적 삶과 공동체의 미래를 실험하는 창조적 공간으로 바라봅니다. 세계의 예술가들과 섬진강의 주민들이 만나 서로의 감각과 경험을 나누며, 이곳에서 가능한 또 하나의 삶의 모습을 상상하고자 합니다.


「섬진강별곡 — 자연에 스미다」.

사람이 자연에 스미고, 예술이 사람의 삶에 스미며, 서로 다른 삶과 기억이 하나의 강물처럼 이어지는 시간. 그리하여 자연은 더 이상 예술의 배경이 아니라 함께 창작하는 존재가 되고, 우리가 살아가는 방식이 되기를 바랍니다.

섬진강을 따라 또 하나의 별곡이 흐르기 시작합니다.

Seomjin River Rhapsody — Seeping into Nature

In the autumn of 2026, the Seomjin River in Gokseong once again flows as a river of art.
Amid a landscape where rivers and forests, rice fields and farmland, villages and human lives seep into one another, we seek to reconsider our relationship with nature and the possibilities of art.

Beyond the conventional stages of the city, Gokseong itself becomes a living theater of nature, where rivers, forests, rice fields, farmland, villages, and the everyday life of rural communities become the stage for art.

“Seomjin River Rhapsody” is an artistic journey that brings the stories of people who have lived along the Seomjin River into the language of contemporary art. The labor of farmers, memories of villages, legends passed down through generations, scenes of everyday life, and countless stories of lives that have emerged and disappeared along the river meet the gestures, sounds, images, and performances of contemporary artists to become a new rhapsody for 2026.

The Korean term Byeolgok (別曲) originally referred to narratives that gave voice to people’s lives and the spirit of their times. We bring that meaning to the Seomjin River today, adding stories of a future yet to come and creating a new song for our time.

To seep in is to break down boundaries.
As water seeps into the earth and light filters into the forest, art enters people’s lives, while nature and the lives of local residents enter the sensibilities of artists. In this process, the boundaries gradually blur—between artist and audience, between artwork and everyday life.

For generations, the Seomjin River has connected different lives. Flowing through countless tributaries and villages, it has created invisible paths between people, and between humanity and nature. In the way this river flows, we discover an attitude of coexistence that we need to learn again today.

The 2026 Seomjingang International Experimental Arts Festival (SIEAF) asks anew, through art, about the relationship between humanity and nature.
Faced with the realities of the climate crisis and regional decline, we choose not to see rural communities as places that are disappearing, but as creative spaces in which ecological ways of life and the future of community can be explored. Artists from around the world and residents along the Seomjin River meet, share their senses and experiences, and imagine another way of living that may be possible here.

“Seomjin River Rhapsody — Seeping into Nature.”

A time when people seep into nature, art seeps into human life, and different lives and memories come together like one flowing river. May nature no longer remain merely a backdrop for art, but become a presence with which we create—and ultimately, part of the way we live.

Along the Seomjin River, another rhapsody begins to flow.

한국의 SIEAF와도 국제교류 프로젝트를 지속하며 트란실바니아와 섬진강을 예술로 연결하고 있다.

AESON ON  ART Festival

AESON은 이탈리아 북동부 프리울리 베네치아 줄리아의 이손초(Isonzo) 강을 중심으로 펼쳐지는 국제 자연·환경예술축제이다.

2008년 시작된 AESON은 강과 숲, 자연경관을 열린 예술공간으로 삼아 랜드아트, 설치, 퍼포먼스, 음악 등 다양한 예술을 선보인다. 예술가와 지역주민, 자연의 관계를 바탕으로 생태와 지속가능성, 장소의 기억을 탐구하며 이탈리아와 슬로베니아를 잇는 문화예술 네트워크를 만들어가고 있다.

JIIAF&지리산 비엔날레

JIIAF & 지리산국제환경비엔날레는 경남 하동의 지리산과 섬진강을 중심으로 펼쳐지는 국제 환경예술축제이다.

자연을 단순한 배경이 아닌 예술의 무대이자 창작의 공간으로 바라보며, 국내외 예술가들과 함께 자연미술, 대지미술, 설치, 동시대미술과 다양한 융복합 예술을 선보이고 있다.

지역의 자연과 삶, 전통적인 원형문화와 동시대 예술을 연결하며, 예술을 통해 인간과 자연이 공존하는 새로운 지역문화와 국제적 예술 네트워크를 만들어가고 있다.
